How to Give Your Kitchen a Deep Clean in Less than a Week
A clean and organize kitchen makes it easier to prepare meals and snacks. All without the frustrating ordeal of looking for clean dishes, measuring cups, pots, pans, and the lids for those items.
Since winter has kept many inside, the traffic through the kitchen has increased. Therefore a spring clean is important to maintain order and sanitary conditions.
Where to Start
Kitchens have lots of cabinets, drawers, refrigerators, countertops, and maybe even a pantry. Professional Organizer Katrina Solomon says, “Sometimes the hardest part is getting started.” She suggests setting a timer for 10 minutes in order to set a goal. Then when the timer goes off, the reward of sticking with it for 10 minutes might be the motivation to keep going.
Making the Most of the Ten Minute Segments
Instead of a decision to de-clutter, clean, and organize the entire kitchen in one day. Start small and therefore the frustration of the huge project will not overwhelm.
Start with one of these ten-minute projects:
-
Pick a shelf in the pantry and get rid of old, stale, or outdated food, use a damp cloth to clean the shelf.
-
Clean out the refrigerator door shelves – remove all the food from the door, and wipe down the shelves. Then return only the food that is not outdated and what will really be used.
-
Empty the forks, knives, and spoon dividers, wash and dry the dividers, and then return the silverware to the drawer.
-
Remove the pots and pans from their storage area, wipe down the shelf, and match the pots with the lids, or if stacking the pots is necessary for spacial reasons, make sure that all the lids are located in the same place.
Completing the Cleaning Project
After a few 10-minute projects, the kitchen will begin to take shape, and the frustration of pulling out a box of crackers only to find they are stale, or taking out a bottle of salad dressing to find that mold will be things of the past.
Hopefully, these first projects will be the motivation needed to complete the job.
Depending on the size of the kitchen and the depth of the mess, the deep clean should be able to be finished within five to seven days if two or three 10-minute projects are completed daily.
Don’t give up. Once the kitchen is completed move on to another room.
